Barcelona! We Have Arrived!

Our second flight from Dubai to Barcelona was very good. We actually preferred the seat configuration on this 777-200 over the 777-300, though it still doesn’t compare to the A380. Unfortunately, we only managed about two hours of sleep—it was one of those situations where you’re just too tired to actually fall asleep.

Debbie trying to hide, "I'm too tired for photos!"

We landed in Barcelona at the same time as three other international flights, which made passport control an absolute nightmare. Even though the self-scan passport lanes appeared to be fully operational with their green lights on, they weren’t in use. Instead, everyone was funneled into one massive serpentine line that felt just like waiting for a ride at Disneyland. It took us a full hour to get through.

By the time we reached the baggage claim area, our assigned carousel had stopped running and was packed with luggage. Thankfully, we quickly spotted our bags, grabbed them, and headed out to meet our Blacklane driver—who, by the way, was wonderful.

The ride to our hotel took about 40 minutes, and we arrived at 10:45 a.m.

The hotel staff has been extremely professional and accommodating. Although our room was guaranteed by noon, it wasn’t quite ready yet due to our early arrival. They escorted us to a bar/lounge area, usually only open in the evenings, which they’ve set up as a comfortable space for early arrivals. They offered pastries, coffee, juice, and water while we wait. They’ll come find us as soon as the room is ready.

Our room was ready right at noon, just as promised.

After unpacking our toiletries and a few clothes, we both took hot showers (Debbie was too tired to take one together—though the shower is definitely big enough! 😎). We felt like completely new people afterward.

We debated taking a nap but decided to zombie through the jet lag so we’ll sleep like the dead tonight (did you catch the pun? 😄). In a bit, we’re planning to walk around the neighborhood, find some tapas, and call it an early night.

We really enjoy the Gothic Quarter. While there are certainly tourists here, it’s nothing like the area near Las Ramblas, which is always overrun. This neighborhood feels more residential and much quieter—such a nice change of pace.

Our hotel is right next door to the Mercat de Santa Caterina, a smaller and more relaxed version of the famous Mercat Boqueria on Las Ramblas, but without the crowds.

We enjoyed a delicious dinner at the market’s only adjoining restaurant: black cod with grilled eggplant over miso sauce, patatas bravas, and a slice of potato and onion tortilla (a classic Spanish omelet). To top it all off, we shared a liter of sangria with our meal. 🍷✨

When we returned to our room, we were delighted to find a bottle of Cava and a small red velvet cake waiting for us—a perfect end to a long travel day!
